Shoe Tying 101?

I am engaged to this woman and she has 3 kids. Her oldest daughter is 9 and I was watching her the other day and we got bored so I told her to get ready and I would take her to the park. She went and put on some play clothes and I said ok get your shoes on and she put on her sandals. I told her to get on some sneakers because she wouldnt be able to play long in her sandals with the playground being on a sandy layout. She kind of pouted off to her room and messed around and I went to see what she was doing and she was playing with her toys kind of pouting still. I asked her if she wanted to go and she said she wasn't going with me if she had to wear what i told her so I just left her to play.

When my fiance got home I told her about the incident and she told me she was probably embarrassed to ask for help tying her shoes. I didn't know what to say. She is almost ten and she can't tie her own shoes. Is that still normal or should she be getting special help with learning this skill.

Shoe Tying 101?
teach her how to tie them.
Reply:her mother should have made sure that she knows how to tie them by now. It is a shame she didin't learn it in school
Reply:my kid was tying her own shoes when she was 3, but a kid who has been in slip-on or velcro shoes all of her life won't have a clue.... she needs some help..... and practice.... you know.... big loop... little loop.... wrap it around and pass it through.
Reply:I couldn't tie my own laces the "way everyone else did" until I was older ( I can't remember when). I looped two bows together and tied them. It worked for me. I am not some one who is uncoordinated, but as a child it's hard to tie laces!

Nowadays, velcro is magic! Buy her some velcro tennyshoes for a gift. She'll love you for it!

If only I had velcro when I was a kid...
Reply:It's actually quite common now a days for kids to not know how to tie their shoes with the popularity of velcrow, laceless shoes and sandals. My 17yr daughters worked at a camp last year. One of them had 8yr girls and the other had 10yr girls. Both of them came home with stories about how long it took their girls to go from swimming w/ sandals to the playground w/sneakers because a few of them did not know how to tie their shoes. They both said that they started teaching their campers.

Both my girls learned at 4yr. I would start teaching her. Sit down and show her and pratice a few times. Each day when she gets her sneakers on, show her. You do one shoe, she tries a couple times on the other. I would suggest showing her the bunny ears way. that's the easiest to learn. Within a week or two, she'll get the hang of it.

best wishes
Reply:now adays this is some what normal with velcro slip ons

when you teach her do not face her then she has to mirror you teach her by doing it next to her or sitting behind her then she can see what you are doing easier for her to copy that way
