My 10 year old daughter is going to sign up for either jazz class or hip hop dance classes. Has anyone ever taken either of these? If so what exactly did each class do? and what kind of music? Are there special shoes for them each, and what kind? Any info would be great. Thank you
Could someone explain what jazz dance and hip hop dance is?
i take jazz and hip hop! in jazz, it's kinda like a hip hop class but more ballet-ish and slow. we do lots of jumps and it helps if you're flexible. in jazz the music we dance to is more on the pop/alternative side like unwritten by natasha bedingfield or rush by aly %26amp; aj. there's a lot of spins and turns and flowy movement. you will need jazz shoes which you can buy online at www.allaboutdance.com. they sell it cheaper there!
i LOVE hip hop way more than jazz because its funner. hip hop is like the dancing you see in music videos but nothing bad or innapropiate. we dance to hip hop/rap music like keep sweating by ray j or lose control by missy elliot. in hip hop you don't actually need to buy dance shoes or anything. she can just wear regular sneakers. (but they have to be comfortable, of course!)
you should buy dance clothes for her when she joins dance. stuff like sweat pants, tank tops, sport bras, and etc. if she joins jazz, she should get more flowy dance pants instead of sweat pants because they're better for doing those leaps in the air. sweat pants are better for hip hop. i would recommend she signs up for both classes because if she just takes one class, shes missing out on a lot for not taking the other one! if she HAS to take one, then i suggest she should sign up for hip hop because i like it more and it's funner. whichever class she signs up for, tell her to start stretching every day because to be a dancer, you have to be flexible. tell her to work on her splits too because that's important in jazz. i hope i helped!
Reply:These people have a lot of knowledge on this subject, I would go check them out. http://www.spiritcheer.com
They also have some other resources related to this topic. Report It
Reply:For jazz you need jazz shoes which are black split soled shoes. Like this:http://www.the-ballet-shop.com/ProductIm...
I wouldn't order them online though go to any dance store and ask for a jazz shoe fitting. Hip hop depends on the shoe but it's usually a jazz shoe check with the studio. Hip hop is the kind of dance you'd see at a basketball game or something usually rap music upbeat and fast! Jazz a little bit of every thing ballet and hip hop-ish. I'd recommend jazz.
Reply:Jazz (depending on the style of the teacher/choreographer) emphasizes technique more than personal style, but is still super fun and high energy. Hip Hop is more about attitude and freestyle movement. There are so many kinds of Hip Hop because it is all about how each individual dancer feels the music. If this is her first class, I would recommend taking jazz. It is better to learn the basics of proper technique before she starts breaking it.
The more comfortable shoes, in my opinion, are Bloch dance sneakers. They provide more arch and ankle support than traditional jazz boots. These usually run around $45 per pair.
As far as the music, it depends, again, on the teacher. It can range from Broadway soundtracks, to Madonna, to Usher, to old school rap. Most studios are aware of the ages of their students and are conscience not to choose anything that is profane or offensive.
I hope you daughter enjoys her class!
Reply:Jazz goes back pretty far. Check out Gregory HInes on Wikkipedia, i think he was best. jazz does require special shoes the music is nice
hip hop requires tennis shoes, loose clothing and hip hop music
Good luck to your daughter!!!
Reply:Hip-Hop is something I know personal and something I've been doing since I was Younger! Its NOT just bumping and Grinding like alot of adults think...there is different forms...Most Hip-Hop can exaplain fillings...
Reply:I take both of these styles of dance...jazz is usually more of a technical dance, like ballet, however it is to fun music hip-hop is like what you see in music videos and it has to do with poping and locking your body. both are very fun classes, however if you daughter wants a dance class that can carry over into ballet and stuff i would do jazz but if she wants to learn to "pop it" then hip-hop is her style. in jazz you can wear jazz shoes or ballet shoes, for hip hop you can wear jazz shoes, hip hop shoes, or gym shoes.
Reply:Jazz - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz_dance (it's mroe technical)
Hip Hop - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_dan... (there are several types but it all boils down to translating "the streets" or the real world into physical movements mixed with spontaneous movements) ... Hope this helps :)
