How do I get my dog to top chewing things up--such as shoes and remote controls!!?

It's hard to remember to put everything away all the time-- She just chewed up her second remote today--now I need to special order a third remote! Any advice?

Ok first off you need to be ready and willing to try everything. And also have tonnes of patience. You'll get nowhere by muzzling or yelling at the dog. It won't work.


Choose a room where you can isolate the pup, or crate train her. It seems mean to think of but really, it's the safest thing that you can do for her. Because she's chewing up remotes and the like, she may eat something that isn't good for her. (Batteries, buttons etc.)


How old is the pup? If she's young, ten to one the pup's teething. Get a few treat despencing toys or some that you can fill with a special treat. (Eg: putting some peanut butter in a "KONG" type toy. It's inexpensive and keeps your dog busy and ammused while you're not in the house.)


This brings me to my next suggestion. It may be an anxiety prevoked behaviour. Separation anxiety is common in some dogs. And sometimes difficult to "reverse". Unless you're willing to take the time and effort to treat it.


Also how long is the pup left alone to her own devices? Dogs are like children, if not properly supervised they're bound to get into any and everything.

Reply:Buy a dog Kong too. Those work on a lot of dogs. You fill it with treats, kong stuffing, or peanut butter. They spend there time trying to get the stuff out and less time on your stuff. They can eventually get to the food, but it keeps them busy.
Reply:keep things picked up and out of reach. Other wise try using bitter yuck or bitter apple. They are sprays that are nontoxic but the dog doesn't like the taste so she woun't chew on it. You can find it a pet stores
Reply:Well you got many good answers already. Now nobody told you the process of the toys. This Is what I did. When we just got our puppy we got ready with lots of toys. Every time the pup went for a shoe or anything else we took it away from him and gave him a toy instead and not saying much but a few firms NOs here and there. No big deal really but you have to do this every time all the time until he won't reach for your shoes anymore. Good luck.

Reply:try spraying pepper or chili powder on the remote.. or just place your things where your dog couldnt find it..
Reply:Sounds like a puppy. They grow out of it. In the mean time bring on the rawhide bones and chew toys.
Reply:For my dog, if its a puppy, we just squirted him with a squirt bottle. They are afraid of anything that jumps out at them. So give that a shot!

Reply:I always try to keep shoes, clothes, remotes, out of our dogs' reach. Yesterday one of the dogs chewed the TV wire into. Thankfully the dog is okay and not dead!
Reply:A good thing to try is getting bitter apple spray, and spraying it on things all over your house that you do not want your dog to chew. It leaves a bad taste in your dog's mouth, but will not harm them. It is also safe to spray on electrical wires (if they have covering).

Reply:It sounds like your dog needs to keep busy! There are a few reasons why your dog is acting out. Anger, jealousy, loneliness etc. A few things you should try are, first puppy proof your home..or get a kennel. Get a good chew bone, one the will take your dog a few days to a week to get through. Take him/her to a pet store and pick out a toy or two. That will give your dog more entertaining things to do with it's time. Also try to give your dog a reward (training treat) every time it's been good...especially when you get home.
